On June 11th 2026 the most-watched sporting event in the history of this planet is returning — bigger, bolder and more spread out than anything we've seen before. The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where Mexico squares off against South Africa in the very first match of an extraordinary tournament. From that opening whistle right through to the Final on July 19th at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the world will be watching.

FIFA World Cup™ 2026 — Tournament Overview
The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup™ is being jointly hosted by three nations — the United States, Canada and Mexico — in what is by a considerable distance the most ambitious logistical undertaking in the tournament's storied history. A total of 16 host cities across North America will receive the world's best national sides, with 11 cities in the USA, three in Mexico and two in Canada. Covering timezones from the US Pacific Coast to the Gulf of Mexico, this will be the first and only World Cup ever played across three different countries simultaneously.
Beyond the historic co-hosting arrangement, this edition marks another seismic shift: the expansion of the tournament field to 48 teams, up from the 32 we've been accustomed to since France 1998. The 48 nations are split into 12 groups of four, and with 32 teams advancing to the knockout rounds — the top two in each group plus the eight best third-placed teams — the Group Stage is more critical and more competitive than ever before. In total, fans will be treated to 104 matches played across 39 days, including a full new Round of 32 before the traditional Round of 16 takes shape.
The Final will be held on Sunday, July 19th 2026 at MetLife Stadium (officially designated New York New Jersey Stadium by FIFA) in East Rutherford, New Jersey — the largest purpose-built stadium to ever host a World Cup final. The two Semi-Finals will take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas (July 14th) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (July 15th), while the Third Place match is scheduled for Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 18th.
